Apply to remain on the roll

The application window is not yet open. You will be able to apply between 3 April and 28 May 2025

Solicitors without a practising certificate must tell us that they wish to remain on the roll each year.

If they want to remain, they will need to apply during the application window (3 April - 28 May) and pay the related fee.

This applies to solicitors without a practising certificate admitted before April 2024 and those who did not renew their certificate in October 2024.

How do you apply to remain on the roll

You must complete your application in mySRA between 3 April and 28 May. Find out more about the application.

If you are working under section 88 (Solicitors Act 1974) as a solicitor without a practising certificate, you must apply to remain on the roll. Section 88 allows solicitors to work in a public department without the requirement to have a practising certificate, so long as they are on the roll.

Check our FAQs about keeping of the roll if you have further questions.

Verifying your mySRA account

Alongside entering your password, we will also send you a code by SMS text message or call to verify your identity to your registered phone number. We highly recommend using a personal number as you will need to have this phone with you when you access mySRA. If you need to change your phone number, please contact us.

What staying on the roll means for you

It means you:

  • can continue to call yourself a solicitor without a practising certificate
  • remain a member of the Law Society and can access the associated benefits
  • retain the right to vote in Law Society Council elections.

What happens if you don't apply to remain

You will be removed from the roll after the application window closes.

If you are removed, you will have to apply to be restored to the roll and pay £20. Additionally, a screening and background check will be required, which costs £34. Find out more.
