Warning: Telephone call and documentation misusing the name and logo of 'Saunders Law'

A member of the public has received a telephone call and documentation falsely claiming to be from 'Saunders Law'.

What is the scam?

The SRA has been informed that a member of the public has received a telephone call from an individual named 'Helena' falsely claiming to be from a genuine solicitor's firm (see genuine details below).

The recipient of the telephone call also received a 'contract' which misuses the name and logo of the genuine firm.

The 'contract', which is in Spanish, refers to the provision of legal services for the supposed recovery of an investment account. The recipient is invited to pay 250 euros as an initial deposit to start the process and agree to pay legal fees of 5 per cent of the capital recovered.

Any business or transaction through the letter described above is not undertaken by a firm or individual authorised and regulated by the SRA.

Is there a genuine firm or person?

The SRA authorises and regulates a genuine firm of solicitors called Saunders & Partners LLP (SRA ID: 622823).

The genuine firm of solicitors have confirmed that they have no connection to the telephone call or contract referred to in the above alert. It has also confirmed that it does not employ an individual by the name of 'Helena'.

What should I do?

When a firm's or individual's identity has been copied exactly (or cloned), due diligence is necessary. If you receive correspondence claiming to be from the above firm(s) or individual(s), or information of a similar nature to that described, you should conduct your own due diligence by checking the authenticity of the correspondence by contacting the law firm directly by reliable and established means. You can contact the SRA to find out if individuals or firms are regulated and authorised by the SRA and verify an individual's or firm's practising details. Other verification methods, such as checking public records (e.g. telephone directories and company records) may be required in other circumstances.
