Warning: Calls misusing the names of Robert Oliver and Burges Salmon LLP

Calls have been made to members of the public misusing the name of solicitor Robert Oliver and the firm Burges Salmon LLP.

What is the scam?

Members of the public have been contacted via telephone by an individual claiming to be the solicitor Robert Oliver of Burges Salmon LLP (see below).

The caller provides details of a genuine historic claim that the recipient brought previously and says that it is possible to resurrect the historic claim.

The calls have then been followed by an e-mail from a company called 'Wealthwise Advisors Ltd' sent from the email address info.wealthwiseadvisorsltd@gmail.com. The e-mail provides details about the apparent claim and requests a 'one-time court fee' to progress the matter.

Any business or transaction through the organisation 'Wealthwise Advisors Limited' is not undertaken by a firm or individual authorised and regulated by the SRA.

Is there a genuine firm or person?

The SRA authorises and regulates a solicitor called Robert Oliver (SRA number 663150) and a firm called Burges Salmon LLP (SRA number 401114).

The genuine solicitor and firm have confirmed that they do not have any connection with 'Wealthwise Advisors Ltd' or the telephone calls referred to in the above alert.

What should I do?

When a firm's or individual's identity has been copied exactly (or cloned), due diligence is necessary. If you receive correspondence claiming to be from the above firm(s) or individual(s), or information of a similar nature to that described, you should conduct your own due diligence by checking the authenticity of the correspondence by contacting the law firm directly by reliable and established means. You can contact the SRA to find out if individuals or firms are regulated and authorised by the SRA and verify an individual's or firm's practising details. Other verification methods, such as checking public records (e.g. telephone directories and company records) may be required in other circumstances.
