An email has been sent falsely claiming to be from Thomas & Gabriel Solicitors Limited.

What is the scam?

The SRA has seen an email sent to a business purporting to be from a genuine firm of solicitors that is authorised and regulated by the SRA (see details of genuine firm below).

The email seen by the SRA relates to purportedly supporting clients with compliance with the relevant regulations regarding content created by third parties and attribution or licensing details. The email was sent from the email address 'ut43403@googlemail.com' and is signed off by an 'Alex Gabriel, Solicitor, Partner'. The email sign-off further includes the email address 'info@thomasgabriel.london', the telephone number '+ 44 20 8064 1490' and the address '4th Floor, St Cross Street, London, EC1N 8UN'.

The SRA does not authorise or regulate a solicitor called 'Alex Gabriel'.

Any business or transaction through the above email addresses, phone number or individual is not undertaken by a firm or individual authorised and regulated by the SRA.

Is there a genuine firm or person?

The SRA authorises and regulates a genuine firm of solicitors called Thomas & Gabriel Solicitors Limited. The genuine head office address of the firm is 85 Middlewood Road, Sheffield, S6 4GX and their genuine telephone number is 01144 497 661. The genuine email address for the firm is info@thomasgabriel.co.uk.

The SRA also authorises and regulates a genuine solicitor called Alexander David Campbell Gabriel, who is employed at a genuine firm of solicitors called Clifford Chance LLP.

The genuine firm of solicitors and the genuine Alexander David Campbell Gabriel have confirmed that they have no connection to the information referred to in the above alert.

What should I do?

When a firm's or individual's identity has been copied exactly (or cloned), due diligence is necessary. If you receive correspondence claiming to be from the above firm(s) or individual(s), or information of a similar nature to that described, you should conduct your own due diligence by checking the authenticity of the correspondence by contacting the law firm directly by reliable and established means. You can contact the SRA to find out if individuals or firms are regulated and authorised by the SRA and verify an individual's or firm's practising details. Other verification methods, such as checking public records (e.g. telephone directories and company records) may be required in other circumstances.
